Anton de Bruin

Anton de Bruin

Anton de Bruin

Rotterdam-based keyboardist, producer and composer Anton de Bruin is sculpting a bold sound that blurs the lines between club and concert hall. With roots in genre-bending projects like Dragonfruit and Peter Somuah, his solo venture is a vibrant one, fusing dub, afrobeat, jazz and electronica into a hypnotic, genre-fluid experience. His 2024 debut album Imaginarium turned heads with its rich textures and experimentation, earning him spots on stages at North Sea Jazz, Valkhof Festival and Grasnapolsky. Now, with his sophomore album Sounds of the Eclipse on the horizon, Anton and his band are primed to ignite dance floors across Europe.

How would you introduce yourselves?

I am Anton de Bruin, a keyboard player and producer from Rotterdam. I try to combine improvised music, dub and a multitude of genres into one to have people dancing to improvised music at 2am to bring improvised music back to a diverse crowd.

Which song of yours do you think best captures your sound - the one you hope people don’t miss?

As of now, that would be all the singles from the upcoming Sounds of the Eclipse album. All the singles are so different from each other but all highlight a different corner of ‘’my sound’’. We have an uptempo samba inspired tune with Running on Slippers, highlife inspired sounds with B3sin, RnB electronic vibes with Keep Your Distance and dub reggae with Sounds of the Siren.

What is a physical space that’s had a big influence on your musical journey?

It would be my own little basement studio in my house, how cliché that might sound. I’ve now moved into a bigger space outside of my house, but my little basement studio was the place where I made and recorded most of the things that shaped me into what I am doing today. It has been a space that allowed me to learn a lot by just putting hours upon hours into learning how to produce, mix, record and engineer while feeling safe to experiment and fail.

Which artist/album made you want to be an artist?

I don’t have a specific one I’m afraid but I remember my mother bringing 2 compilations albums to the house when I was younger, one was a 4 CD big compilation of reggae music and the other one was a 4 CD compilation of jazz music. I think that opened the doors to the rabbit hole that I fell into on Youtube to discover all kinds of new things. I just kinda grew into it.

Who’s in your dream 5 piece supergroup?

That answer will probably change every month haha but for now I’d say: Shabaka Hutchings on sax, Moses Boyd on drums, Joe Armon-Jones on keys, Chronixx on vocals and Raul Monsalve on bass

Most underrated artist in your opinion?

Onipa. Its a group by Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist) and K.O.G. I’ve known them for a couple of years and the productions and mix of styles and influences is crazy. Weirdly enough I feel like not many people know them and that is a shame because their live show is also insane. I also want to give a shout out to Raul Monsalve. I saw him again at Into The Great Wide Open this year after catching him at Super-Sonic Jazz Festival a few years ago and goddamn, that band GROOOOVES.

5 favourite songs all time or right now?

Mix of both: Last Words - Kenny Beats Kingfisher - Joe Armon-Jones Love O Love - Pat Kelly Lady - Fela Kuti 10% - Kaytranada

Who are you most looking forward to catching at Super-Sonic Jazz Festival?

The Cavemen! I’ve been listening to their music for quite some time now but never managed to catch them live. We play on the same day so thats a must for me. I’m also looking forward to see Steam Down. I caught them once in London at their old spot at the Matchstick Piehouse in Deptford, London so I’m curious to see how they sound now since they’ve been doing very well!
