The concept of Super-Sonic Jam was born a few years ago in the basement of Paradiso during Super-Sonic Jazz Festival. In those late-night jam sessions, musicians and visitors came together to play deep into the night - driven by spontaneity, creativity, and pure improvisation.
Since early 2024, Super-Sonic Jam has found its home at Skatecafe, where every edition has sold out in no time. Every now and then, we return to where it all began: Paradiso. Each session is hosted by different collectives and artists who bring their own flavour to the stage. London’s Steam Down, Rotterdam’s BIRD & House of Knowledge, Haarlem’s INI Movement, and Amsterdam’s Els Jam and Higherlife Jam have all brought their energy to the mix.
Every jam begins with listening. Before you play a note, take in the groove, the chemistry, and the energy in the room. Let the music guide you rather than rushing in. When everyone listens deeply, the whole session lifts.
The host or house band shapes the flow of the night — they help keep things smooth, open, and welcoming. They’ll signal when the circle is ready for new voices and new ideas. Trust their direction so the whole room can stay connected.
A jam is a shared musical home. Play with awareness: balance your volume, leave air in the music, and give others room to express themselves. Think of it as a spacious conversation where every voice matters and the music breathes because of it.
Take your moment with confidence, enjoy it, and then step back so someone else can shine too. Short, meaningful contributions keep the energy moving and make space for fresh ideas. The magic of a jam comes from passing the flame, not holding onto it.
Not everyone will know every tune - and that’s part of the fun. If the music shifts, move with it. Try a new melody, a different key, a surprising rhythm. Creativity grows when we’re flexible, curious, and ready to explore the unexpected together.
At its heart, Super-Sonic Jam is about joy, expression, and connection. Bring good energy, be present with the people around you, and trust the flow of the moment. When you let go and let the music lead, incredible things happen.

This special edition, “In the Name of the Moluccan Diaspora,” celebrates 75 years of the Moluccan community in the Netherlands. Initiated from within the community and realized with Super-Sonic Jazz, the night brings together history, memory and new sounds - from archive to contemporary soul, jazz and improvisation.
The evening is led by Rafael Devánte Sinay, Gino-Cochise and Djé-Rimo Holle, and co-initiated by Niquel Matitahatiwen.
To mark the occasion, we asked co-initiator Niquel Matitahatiwen what we should read, watch and listen to if we want to better understand the Moluccan culture and diaspora.
Super-Sonic Jam is an open session where musicians, producers, and music lovers come together. Everyone is welcome to participate! Each edition features a house band that kicks things off. The host will announce when the stage is open for everyone to join the improvisation.
No advance sign-up is required. Simply show up and talk to the host upon arrival or make eye contact with the host/band during the session. If it’s very busy, the host may use a sign-up list, but it is usually spontaneous.
Expect the signature Super-Sonic blend: jazz-influenced sounds mixed with soul, hip-hop, broken beat, and electronic influences. It’s all about spontaneity and creativity.
A core backline (drums, keys, bass, and guitar amps) is provided. However, we encourage instrumentalists (horns, guitars, basses) to bring their own instruments whenever possible.
Tickets are available through our official website and Paradiso’s ticket platform . Avoid third-party resellers to ensure your ticket is valid.
Absolutely! The jams are just as exciting for listeners as they are for performers. It’s a great way to discover new talent and connect with the community.
Super-Sonic Jam usually takes place at Skatecafe or Paradiso, but occasionally pops up at other venues and creative spaces that fit the Super-Sonic Jazz community. Check our agenda for the latest dates and locations.
