Summer Pearl

Summer Pearl is a London-born and bred, Jamaican/Grenadian rooted, genre-fluid artist known for her carefree performances and to-the-point lyrics. Her sound blends influences from jazz, soul, hip-hop, R&B and reggae, resulting in music that is both deeply personal and politically charged. “My music is a reflection of my past and a meditation of our present,” she says. “It is both a personal and sometimes political message exploring Black and female liberation, love gained and love lost, and anything I feel.” With roots in sound system culture and a strong presence in London’s underground scenes, Summer Pearl channels the voices of her ancestors, women and herself to craft music full of soul and truth.

How would you introduce yourself?

Summer Pearl - thats what my parents named me. Music artist from London by way of Jamaica.

Which song of yours do you think best captures your sound - the one you hope people don’t miss?

Any song to be honest, they're all quite different - but I'll say, THE CREATOR. I think it’s a good indication to where I'm at in my life right now.

What is a physical space that’s had a big influence on your musical journey?

Theres a place called Map Studio Cafe in London, Kentish Town which I can remember always being in my life. My dad used to take me there from young for lunch and there were vinyls you could listen to on headphones on the wall which I'd listen to when my dad was chatting for hours, and then cut to a few years later in my teenage years, I sang upstairs in their venue room and then a few years after that, I recorded my first (unreleased) project in their studio. Maps just always been in my life.

What are ingredients that make up your sound?

Soul - Everything comes from my soul. I think thats why it takes me so long to get music out. It's quite a personal process. I have to have gone through something to then process it and then write about it and then release it. It’s a process.  Spirit - Sometimes, I don't even feel like I'm writing and creating, its coming through me.  Truth - It’s all the truth.

Which artist/album made you want to be an artist?

There are many, but Baduizm by Erykah Badu is one of the artists and albums - I have the album title tattooed on my left arm. I was 2 when that album came out, but one of my first clear memories is that album being played a lot around the house and in the car for years throughout my childhood by my parents.

5 Favourite songs of all time or right now?

Erykah Badu: Green Eyes - It's just amazing. Richie: Switching Faces - This song has been on repeaaaat. Love her. Bob Marley: Natural Mystic - To be honest, any Bob song will do. Lalah Hathaway: Something D'angelo: Spanish Joint

Who are you most looking forward to catching at Super-Sonic Jazz Festival?
