Super-Sonic Series brings together thirteen artists for six months of collaborative music-making. Jams and improvisation evolve into thirteen original tracks, a compilation album, two collective live performances, and a short documentary.
The project began July 1st 2026 with the Dune Sessions 5-day artist residency - organised by Into the Great Wide Open, Dune Sessions, PAARD and SuperSonic Jazz- on the island of Vlieland, where twelve artists spent five days writing, jamming and camping together. Working from a former cinema inside Brouwerij Fortuna that had been transformed into a temporary studio, the group immersed themselves in music, with the island's landscape, its wind, dunes, water and silence, finding its way into the recordings. Shortly afterwards, Junya joined the project as the thirteenth artist.
Rather than being the destination, the residency marked the starting point. From the material created on Vlieland, each artist takes the lead in developing one composition, while the rest of the group remains closely involved throughout the process. Depending on the needs of each piece, additional musicians from outside the core group are invited to contribute. Together they refine the arrangements before recording the final versions.
Beyond creating new music, the programme is designed around artistic exchange. Through rehearsals, workshops and group conversations, the artists share ideas, creative approaches and feedback, supporting one another through every stage of the process, from the first improvised sketch to the final recording to live performances.
Between 20 July and 9 August, the thirteen compositions will be recorded over thirteen studio sessions at The Womb in The Hague.
The first public presentation takes place on 29 August at Into the Great Wide Open, where the group will perform a collective Dune Sessions concert inspired by the residency.
Super Sonic Series will be released on 22 November, followed by a collective performance at Super Sonic Jazz Festival in Paradiso. Filmmaker Jonathan Sipkema is documenting the project in a short film scheduled for release in January 2027.
Series also marks the first step in expanding Super Sonic Jazz into a broader production house. Alongside concerts, the Super Sonic Jam, Showcase Fest and its annual festival, the platform aims to provide artists with the time, resources and production support needed to realise ambitious ideas that might otherwise remain out of reach. Sometimes that means helping develop an artist's own vision. At other times it means creating space to experiment beyond the expectations of the music industry. While music remains at the core, those ideas can take many forms, from documentaries and live concepts to publications and new collaborative formats. Through this approach, Super Sonic Jazz hopes to strengthen artistic communities and build a sustainable foundation for future projects, both in the Netherlands and beyond.
More than 130 supporters already contribute to this vision through Super Sonic Support, a pay what you can membership programme that enables Super Sonic Jazz to invest in projects whose value is not measured by immediate commercial return.
