ZENA is the London duo of Yohan Kebede, keyboardist and synth player in Kokoroko, and bassist and producer Menelik. Connected by their Ethiopian heritage, the two have found a shared language in the space between tradition and experimentation. Their music draws from the Ethiopian sounds they grew up with, but takes them somewhere unexpected. Deep bass, hypnotic keys and loose, psychedelic grooves meet jazz, soul, R&B and dub, creating something that feels both rooted and completely contemporary. They’re taking the music that shaped them and letting it evolve through their own experiences as London musicians. The result is soulful, rhythmic and quietly adventurous: music with deep roots, a strong sense of place, and plenty of room to move.
