Lakecia Benjamin
Acclaimed American jazz, funk, and R&B saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin began her musical journey at the Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and further honed her skills at New School University. Early in her career, she played with jazz legends like Clark Terry and Reggie Workman, leading to performances with Rashied Ali, the David Murray Big Band, and James “Blood” Ulmer.
Benjamin’s deep jazz roots and dynamic arranging skills have made her a sought-after collaborator for luminaries like Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and The Roots. She performed at North Sea Jazz in 2023, where her captivating intensity was widely praised. Her latest album, Phoenix, builds on the Coltranes’ legacy. Lakecia Benjamin will captivate audiences at Super-Sonic Jazz in the Netherlands.
Emma-Jean Thackray
Emma-Jean Thackray is a multifaceted artist, excelling as a composer, producer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and DJ. Born in Yorkshire and now residing in south London, Thackray made waves with her 2020 EPs Um Yang and Rain Dance which spotlighted her unique, spiritually-minded, dancefloor-angled take on jazz. Her 2021 album Yellow released on her own imprint Movementt, not only topped the UK Jazz Charts but also sold over 25,000 copies and led to performances across more than 20 countries. Thackray’s music is defined by a strong groove, providing an anchor even in the most experimental tracks. Her dynamic blend of jazz, groove, and improvisation offers a captivating and immersive experience.
Butcher Brown
Pulsing from the nerve center of Jellowstone Studios in Richmond, VA, Butcher Brown takes careful note of the history and legacy of jazz and throws caution to the wind. Despite all band members being born after the mid-70s – the golden age of fusion – you can hear influences from bands like Weather Report, Return To Forever, early Earth Wind & Fire, and maybe even a hint of Zappa in their music.
Their musical vibe blends jazz with hip hop, funk, rap, rock and soul. The group honors each musical genre and, at the same time, challenges traditional musical boundaries. The cohesive sound of Butcher Brown stems from the intertwined talent of its five members, each contributing something unique to the mix.
Greg Foat
Greg Foat is one of the UK’s leading jazz pianists, composers, and music producers. He has collaborated with a diverse array of musicians, including Bob Lind, Moses Boyd, Curtis Lundy, Rita Ora, Wendy James, Questlove, and The Kooks. In recent years, he has recorded for Jazzman Records, Athens Of The North, and Strut.
Explore Greg Foat’s latest album, a blend of analog electronic sci-fi library grooves inspired by the 70s and 80s Sonoton catalog. The album features dynamic drumming by Ayo Salawu and Foat’s vintage synthesizers.
Lizzie Berchie
Last February, Lizzie Berchie dazzled on stage supporting Noname, and we’re so excited we can invite her back to Amsterdam. Singer-Songwriter and producer Lizzie Berchie was born and raised in East London. Fusing her childhood influences of R&B, neo-soul, jazz, reggae, and highlife, Lizzie creates lovely, infectious soul sounds that explore a multitude of essential themes including the celebration of life, love, and self-empowerment. Her musical influences span from Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday to Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and Cleo Sol. She’s one to look out for in 2024 as she about to blow up.
ROSEYE
ROSEYE, led by Tallulah Rose, combines psychedelic grooves with ethereal narratives. Their hotly anticipated debut album, released in April 2024 on the Super-Sonic Jazz label, explores themes of sexuality, spirituality, nature, and sorrow. This quintet from Amsterdam showcases their diverse European roots in a fusion of soul, jazz, gospel, hip-hop, and electronica. Drawing inspiration from Jordan Rakei, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Robert Glasper, ROSEYE’s music is an honest, groovy, and explosive yet intimate communion of sounds. During last years edition of Super-Sonic Jazz Festival, ROSEYE performed in the upstairs hall to a packed audience, and rightfully so: you don’t want to miss ROSEYE!
